Is the future of fashion shaped
by business models?

The EU has issued a clear mandate for fashion brands, placing the industry under new scrutiny. Now, every brand is required to conduct an in-depth, critical examination of its structure, operations, and processes. This involves a rigorous analysis of business models and the entire value chain—from raw materials to end consumers—to truly understand the impact of each stage, both upstream and downstream.

While this shift poses challenges, it also holds the potential to drive significant change across the fashion world, setting higher standards for sustainability. Here, you’ll find the latest news, events, and workshops all aimed at helping the industry move toward a more sustainable future.

RESEARCH PROJECT

DURABILITY IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

Durability: Overview and Implementation is a one year research project in which the project partners explore questions of durability in garments, from the perspective of product design and business models alike. Supported by the Danish of Education and Science and the Lifestyle and Design Cluster, the project is led by Kirsti and two colleagues at the Royal Danish Academy — a lecturer and pattern maker and a PhD student working on resale business models - in close collaboration with KEA (Copenhagen School of Design and Technology) and Aalborg University. Together, they’ve gathered 14 Danish industry players — ranging from startups to retailers and established brands and large sports companies — to study durability in garments.

Unfolding challenges and opportunities in durability in garments with the project partners over the last months, our conversations have become increasingly nuanced - discussing aspects within and across technical, functional, emotional and also social durability and how to align aims of durability with the business model.

READY - KIRSTI´S DREAM PROJECT

READY is a three year research project that aims to explore, develop and support scalable solutions that can make it possible for the industry to mature recycled and local raw materials and new fibres in a circular loop that will prolong the lifetime of products, improve their quality for use and make them recyclable and without harmful substances. With her passion for local manufacturing and place-based business, this is a dream project for Kirsti. Not only does it allow us to explore and understand challenges and opportunities in local feedstock for fiber production, it also allows us to build textiles skills in a local context. This is extremely exciting in a country that over the last decades has outsourced large parts of its textile and production knowledge.
Innovation Fund Denmark has invested DKK 17.5 million in READY while the total investment of the participating partners is DKK 12 million. The Research Centre for Creative Industries and Professions at VIA University College is project lead. The other partners in the project are Danish Technological Institute, Lifestyle & Design Cluster, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, The University of Southern Denmark, Aalborg University, BESTSELLER, Kvadrat, Nybo Workwear, Sontex Tekstil, Kjellerup Væveri, HAACK Recycling and Textile Change.
